Comfort Versus Support
Every
mattress we carry will give you great support! That's one of the most
important features in a mattress. And your comfort preference is equally
important - what good is great support if you can't sleep because you're
uncomfortable?! What affects the comfort level of the bed is the
amount of cushioning on the surface of the mattress.
Imagine a
Comfort Scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being very firm, similar to a carpeted floor,
and 10 being incredibly soft, like floating on a cloud. Using this scale,
choose your perfect comfort range from the following choices:
Firm
Firm
mattresses are rated between 2 and 4 on our comfort scale. They provide
great support for your body and an almost flat surface with very little
padding. Firm mattresses are sometimes referred to as "tight top" because
they have stitching patterns that compress all the padding layers into one
tight layer.
Medium
Mattresses
that are rated medium have the same terrific support as the firm mattresses,
but there are extra layers of cushioning material sewn into the surface of the
mattress. It's similar to putting a comforter on the firm bed.
Medium mattresses are rated between 5 and 7 on our comfort scale.
Soft
Soft
mattresses cradle you in comfort. They have every bit of the support that
firm and medium mattresses have, but they also have many layers of soft fibers
and foam sewn into the surface so they almost make you feel like you are
floating on a cloud! A soft mattress feels like you put 2 or 3 comforters
on the firm bed. The comfort scale rating for soft mattresses would be 8
to 10.
Additional
information about comfort and surface construction:
Cushion Firm
Mattresses
Cushion Firm
mattresses are designed to fall between the comfort of a firm bed and a medium
bed, offering slightly more cushioning than the firm, but less than the medium.
Plush
Mattresses
Plush is a
bedding term that basically means that the bed has a medium comfort
level. Plush beds usually have a wide diamond or block pattern on the
surface, allowing you to feel more of the cushioning. Plush mattresses
are usually between 8 and 14 inches high.
Pillow Top
Mattresses
Over the
last ten years, Pillow Top mattresses have become very popular. A pillow
top is created by placing some of the upholstery layers into a separate
section. This section is attached to the mattress by its bottom fabric,
and the seam is about 2" in from the edge, so you can actually flex the pillow
top edge. It looks almost like a very thin mattress placed on top of a
thicker mattress. Typically, Pillow Top mattresses are between 11 and 15
inches high.
Ultra Plush
Mattresses
Ultra Plush
mattresses are conventional beds that have many layers of cushioning material
sewn into the surface of the mattress. These mattresses range in height
from 12 to 16 inches.
Box Pillow
Top Mattresses
A Box Pillow
Top mattress has a gusseted edge on the top layer, and is attached by the
bottom fabric, resulting in an indentation between the top and the bottom
sections. These are typically 14 to 18 inches high.
Euro Top
Mattresses
A Euro Top
mattress is an ultra plush bed that has a row of piping that indicates where
the upholstery layers begin. This design does not have an indentation
between the top and bottom sections of the bed. You will find these
ranging between 14 and 18 inches.
