Before you even start researching mattresses, you
need to have a checklist in mind. If your are a first-time mattress buyer, make
a list of your "sleep needs." Do you need extra comfort? Extra space? Are you
part of a couple? If you are purchasing a new mattress, think about the changes
in your life since you last bought one. Have you married or have you lost a
partner? Have you suffered an injury or developed a sleep disorder? Have you
aged? Remember, as you age your mattress needs change. If you are buying a
mattress for a child, your child has special needs too (see question on "What
kind of mattress do children need?"). If you are married, involve your
spouse in the buying decisions.
Also, remember CSSM -
Comfort, Support, Space, and Matched Set. Let's face it, you buy a mattress
because it feels good. Secondly, you buy it because it holds your spine in
place and keeps you from waking up feeling stiff and sore. You also want a
mattress that doesn't make you sleep in a cramped position, particularly if you
live with a partner. Generally speaking, couples sleep best on a queen or
king-size mattress. And what you may not know is that you want to purchase a
mattress and foundation together. See "Perfect
Match."
