Normally, 'musty' mattresses are considered
bad for your health, but not these. 'Musty' in this case refers to
the features you should look for when you buy a new mattress.
-
Support, Please: No
matter what kind of a support system you have in waking life,
you should have a proper one while you are asleep. The right mattress
will provide support for all points in your body, particularly
your spine, and keep your body in its natural curve. Your spine
should support you the same way while you are asleep as it does
while you are standing. However, support may not be everything…
-
Creature Comforts:
A 1998 study supported by the Sleep Council and conducted by Christopher
Idzikowski suggests that comfort matters more than support when
people hit the sack. More than half of the study's 100 UK sleepers
had bought new beds because their old ones were uncomfortable.
On average, people complained they slept on uncomfortable mattresses
got less sleep than those who did not complain.
-
Mattresses are getting thicker: Today's top quality mattresses are great deal thicker
then that mattress you bought just 5 years ago. The good news
is that those thicker mattresses mean greater comfort now and
years from now. So don't be afraid of those thick mattresses,
although your grandma's hand-me-down sheets won't fit; there are
plenty of options available for every budget. So embrace those
thicker models, your back and the rest of your body will thank
you for it.
-
I Need My Space: Make
sure you have room to stretch out. Whether the mattress is a twin,
a full, a queen or a king, you'll know if it's spacious enough
if you don't get that "cramped" feeling in your legs. This is
especially important when sleeping with a partner or spouse, or
when buying a bed that two young children will share. Also, if
you are pregnant, you will need twice as much space, so buy your
mattress accordingly.
-
Built To Last: Your
bed may be soft, but your mattress should have a core of steel.
That is, it should pass any durability tests. If it's top-quality
and guaranteed to last for 10 years (the ideal time for buying
a new mattress), then you've got a winner.
-
I've Got You Covered:
You have a warranty for your VCR, your coffee maker, your new
watch, your portable CD player, so why wouldn't you have one for
your mattress? Note that warranties only cover workmanship flaws
and product defects, not normal wear and loss of support.
-
Perfect Match: In choosing your bedspreads, sheets and pillows, you
can mix and match with wonderful results. This does not apply
to what's under the sheets. If you have a king-size mattress,
get a king-size foundation. If you have a King Koil mattress,
buy the foundation in the King Koil brand. If you have a new mattress
and an old foundation (or vice versa,) toss out the old and bring
in the new. You'll wear out the mattress or foundation more quickly
otherwise.
-
Count Sheep, Not Dollars: The Better Sleep Council says: "Shop for
the best value, not the lowest price. "Bargain bedding" is no
bargain when it comes to getting a good night's sleep. Buying
the best you can afford is a healthy investment in yourself."
-
Outside The Box: A
good box spring is a good investment, the boxspring is a crucial
element. A box spring acts as a shock absorber relieving the mattress
of abuse and allowing it to maintain a longer comfort life. When
buying a mattress, be mindful of the coils. According to Productopia's
Expert Advice : "When comparing coil counts, also check the coil
count in the size you are considering buying. Don't assume that
the full-size coil count ratio will be the same in a queen or
king. It may not be. If it isn't, it could totally change the
feel and support of the bed."
-
Sleep On It: This
is basic advice. Even if you don't feel comfortable napping on
a Posturepedic mattress in the showroom, just stretch out on it
and imagine yourself sleeping. You can do that by visiting a 1800Mattress® showroom
near you!
