Sleep Debt Survey
Home  >  Sleep Well  >  Sleep Debt  >  Survey

1) Do you get more or less sleep than you need?

  All Male Female
More 17% 19% 14%
Less 54% 51% 56%
Just right amount 28% 28% 28%
Don’t know 1% 2% 2%

While men and women answered similarly, different age groups did not. The younger people are, the less well-rested they feel – 63 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds say they get less sleep than they need vs. 32 percent of those 65 and older.

2) Do you think sleep loss is bad for you?

  All Male Female
Yes 75% 72% 77%
No 21% 23% 19%
Don’t know 4% 5% 4%

People are eating right and exercising endlessly in the name of good health. But they’re ignoring the third member of the "triumvirate of health" – sleep. They know they need more sleep, but they aren’t getting it.

3) What is the main consequence, for you, of not getting enough sleep?

  All Male Female
Loss of energy 48% 46% 50%
Crankiness 20% 20% 20%
Less alert 10% 10% 11%
Less productive 8% 9% 7%
Other/Don’t know 14% 15% 12%

With half the respondents already admitting they don’t get enough sleep in question 1, these results seem ominous. Lack of sleep is leaving millions of people without the energy to work as hard - or play as hard – as they’d like. The problem seems especially severe for seniors: some 61 percent of those 65 and older cited "loss of energy" as a consequence of insufficient sleep.

4) How much sleep do you average on weeknights?

  All Male Female
Less than 5 hours 8% 9% 7%
5 to 6 hours 20% 20% 19%
6 to 7 hours 30% 29% 30%
7 to 8 hours 23% 22% 23%
8 or more hours 19% 18% 20%
Don’t know 1% 1% 3%

More people suffer from a lack of sleep during the week, when, given the demands that work puts on them, their need for sleep is perhaps greatest.

5) How much sleep do you average on weekend nights?

  All Male Female
Less than 5 hours 6% 5% 7%
5 to 6 hours 11% 9% 13%
6 to 7 hours 21% 21% 22%
7 to 8 hours 23% 22% 23%
8 or more hours 38% 42% 34%
Don’t know 1% 1% 1%

Not until the weekend do people approach getting the amount of sleep most adults need – 8 to 8.5 hours. In fact, double the number of people sleep more than 8 hours on weekends as do during the week. Men are especially likely to make up lost sleep on the weekends – the percentage sleeping more than eight hours springs from 18 percent to 42 percent.

The BSC Sleep Deficit survey of 1,000 adults was conducted in January 1994 by Bruskin/Goldring Research. The sampling error is + three percent.
